It rained hard last night. Today is sunny again but windy. Fall is in the air. How nice it was to sit by the fountain watching the water show and the world go by sipping on coffee at a corner cafe.
Notes from this morning...
Phil Collins' into the night is playing as I enter Cafe Crema. My second time coming to this cafe because, not only do they play my kind of music - most of the time, it has big windows by a pedestrian walkway for people/dog watching. I have been lucky to get the corner table by the window.
It is 9am and I am trying a new routine today. Instead of waiting until chores are done, I am going out first. As for chores, the 3 of us volunteers nodded in agreement, at least 2 of us nodded, to divide the chores by floor. The ground level (Floor 0) has the 18 bed dorm room, a room with 2 showers, and 2 separate toilets. Floor 1 has the kitchen, dining room, and small sitting area. Floor 2 has the laundry room, 12 beds, and 2 separate bathrooms with toilet and shower. Every day we rotate the floor. The person doing Floor 2 tends to have the least work to do with focusing on the laundry. Those 12 beds are only for overflow. So far we used a few of those beds 2 nights out of the 4 nights. Has it only been 4 nights? Seems longer. 11 days remaining to meet more pilgrims, see more of Logrono, and eat more basque cake.
The person doing Floor 2 gets a bit of a break during the day to do as they please before reporting back for the 5pm dinner planning meeting. I am Floor 2 today and decided to start laundry then have a coffee before running back to run the dryer. I will do this about 4 times today. Two loads of sheets and two loads or dish rags and towels. The washing machine is small. The dryer is big but can take 2 hours of drying to get the items dry. The Floor 2 person will also do the food shopping once the meal is decided on unless that person is cooking the dinner. That would be me for today. We wait until 5pm to get a headcount of the pilgrims wanting to share in the communal dinner. We cook, they wash. Works out great. They are always eager to help with anything. Last night there was 12 of us for dinner. It was a salad, bread, and pasta night. Always salad and bread. So far we have been rotating between lentils or pasta or a potato w chorizo dish. Last night no leftovers meaning we might not have made enough food for everyone to get their full. Some nights we have lots of leftovers. Looking at the time, I will need to head back and switch the sheets to the dryer.
With a few bites of basque cake left, I am thinking I should not have cake for breakfast. I was planning on getting a small sandwich (bocadillo) that most bar/cafes have on display at the counter but not when I got here at 9am. Now (9:30am) they are slowing coming out of the kitchen. Sometimes it does not pay to be early. Time to make my way back. Here is a map of the area I explore daily. The nail clipper is pointing to where I stay. You can see I have lots of green space across from me. The next afternoon off, I would like to tour the underground wine cellars created in the 16th century.
